Tibet travel guide

Plan a considered journey through Tibet’s history, culture and highland landscapes.

Before you book

Choose your priorities, dates, budget and pace. Entry requirements and roads can change, so check them for your itinerary before booking.

Permits and documents

Foreign passport holders need to check China entry requirements and arrange the Tibet travel permit. Documents depend on nationality, status and itinerary; some areas may require additional arrangements. Travelers from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao should confirm their own document requirements in advance.

Choosing a season

Spring flowers, green summer pastures, autumn views and quieter winter city visits each offer a different experience. Rain, snow and road conditions affect access, so check by region.

Air, rail and road

Depending on availability, consider flights, the Qinghai–Tibet Railway or an overland route. Schedules and road conditions change. Rail travel does not guarantee protection against altitude illness; allow time to rest.

Itineraries, stays and costs

Allow acclimatisation time in Lhasa before considering lakes, Shigatse, Everest or Ngari. Accommodation differs between towns and remote areas. Prices depend on dates, group size, transport, hotels, meals and admissions.

Altitude and health

Anyone can develop altitude illness. Rest on arrival and avoid strenuous activity and alcohol. Do not ascend with symptoms such as headache or nausea. If symptoms worsen, seek medical help and descend; breathlessness at rest, confusion or difficulty walking require urgent action. Discuss existing medical conditions with a clinician before travel.

Packing and food

Bring documents, layered warm clothing, comfortable shoes, sun protection and personal medicines. Facilities vary by location; tell us about dietary requirements in advance.

Culture and etiquette

Follow local customs in monasteries and on pilgrimage routes. Ask before photographing people or sacred spaces, keep your voice low and give worshippers room.
