Everest Base Camp and Spectacular Himalayan Scenery

Three 8,000m Peaks Viewed from Tibet, the Roof of the World

Snowland Travel

The Himalaya is home to many magnificent snowy mountains, including the world's highest peak, Everest.

Among them, Everest, Cho Oyu and Shishapangma are representative 8,000m peaks that can be viewed from the Tibetan side.

Everest at 8,848.86m, Cho Oyu at 8,188m and Shishapangma at 8,027m.

Each has a distinct shape and history, symbolizing the grandeur of Himalayan nature.

Snowland Travel offers special photography and plateau culture journeys centered on these three renowned peaks.

Our itineraries focus on viewpoints open to ordinary tourists. Access to mountaineering base camps is arranged individually after confirming the required permits and local reception conditions.

A Journey to Everest | Himalayan Landscapes and Plateau Culture

A journey to admire Everest from the Tibetan plateau. Alongside snowy mountain vistas, Snowland Travel values time to experience the culture, faith and daily lives of the people who call this land home.

Looking up at mountains, walking through towns along the way and talking with local guides: each opens a door to Tibetan experiences that photographs alone cannot convey. We combine monasteries and townscapes in Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse for journeys rich in both scenery and culture.

Mountains change with moving clouds and the direction of light. Alongside photography, allow time simply to watch the scenery. We reserve time for travel and rest according to access limits, road conditions and your health.

1. Everest Base Camp ཇོ་མོ་གླང་མ།

Everest, the world's highest peak and widely known by its Tibetan name Qomolangma, is a magnificent snowy mountain rising to 8,848.86m.

It stands in the central Himalaya on the border between Tibet and Nepal.

Everest's north face, seen from Tibet, is covered in immense rock walls, snow and ice, and has long captivated mountaineers and photography enthusiasts worldwide.

The summit is especially beautiful in sunrise or sunset light; with favorable weather, you may see the snowy peak glowing gold.

Viewing Areas North of Everest

Ordinary sightseeing mainly visits the area around Rongbuk Monastery and the designated tourist base camp viewing area.

From this high-altitude area at approximately 5,200m, you can admire the grandeur of the world's highest peak.

Ordinary tourism permits alone do not allow entry into expedition camps or glacier areas.

チョ・オユーの雪壁と氷河

2. Cho Oyu Base Camp ཇོ་བོ་དབུ་ཡ།

Cho Oyu is the world's sixth-highest mountain, at 8,188m.

It stands west of Everest on the border between Tibet and Nepal.

Cho Oyu is characterized by broad snowfields, a seemingly gentle summit and a mountain mass covered in enormous glaciers.

It was first climbed on October 19, 1954, by Austrian mountaineers Herbert Tichy and Joseph Jöchler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa Lama.

Cho Oyu Views and Photography

On the Tibetan side, Cho Oyu may be visible from locations such as the area around Old Tingri.

On clear days, blue sky and white snowy peaks form a beautiful contrast in scenery unique to the vast Tibetan plateau.

Visiting Cho Oyu's mountaineering base camp may require permits different from those for ordinary sightseeing.

Snowland Travel therefore first builds itineraries around viewpoints that ordinary travelers may legally visit.

シシャパンマ峰の雪山

3. Shishapangma Base Camp ཤི་ཤ་པང་མ།

Shishapangma is the world's 14th-highest mountain, at 8,027m.

It is known as the only one of the fourteen 8,000m peaks whose summit lies within China.

Rising in the Himalaya in the southern Tibetan plateau, Shishapangma is covered in magnificent snow walls and glaciers.

It was first climbed by a Chinese expedition in 1964.

Nature and Views around Shishapangma

Shishapangma is surrounded by vast plateau landscapes, snowy mountains, glaciers and beautiful Lake Peiku Tso.

Around Peiku Tso in particular, favorable weather may reveal a magnificent combination of lake and snowy Himalayan peaks.

The contrast of blue water and snowy mountains is an appealing subject for photography enthusiasts.

Access to the mountaineering base camp requires confirmation of local regulations and permit conditions.

ロンブク寺の白い仏塔とチョモランマ北壁

Rongbuk & Everest Base Camp

Everest rises at the end of the valley, with a monastery and white stupas in the foreground. Around Rongbuk, Himalayan grandeur and Tibetan faith share a single landscape. The growing presence of the north face as you approach the mountain offers a different experience from distant plateau views.

At Snowland Travel, we value time to appreciate the mountain slowly as well as take commemorative photographs. Clouds drift, light touches the snow, and the peak may take on soft colors at dusk. During monastery visits, we respect pilgrims' prayers and monastic life and follow local guidance.

Ordinary sightseeing focuses on Rongbuk Monastery and the designated viewpoints open to visitors at the time. Tourist sites called “base camp” differ from camps used by mountaineering expeditions; local rules determine access boundaries and transport methods.

If you wish to photograph morning or evening light, we can discuss itineraries with an overnight stay nearby. We check accommodation operations, facilities and room views, but cannot promise clear skies or mountain views from guest rooms.

As this involves staying at high altitude, overnight locations are considered in light of your preceding itinerary and health. We balance time near the mountain with rest to propose an unhurried journey suited to your wishes.

ギャウラ峠周辺のつづら折りの道とヒマラヤの展望

Gawula Pass | A Grand Himalayan Viewpoint

This pass, over 5,000m high, lies on the route from Shelkar toward Everest's northern side. As the road climbs through switchbacks, a sweeping panorama opens across plateau ridges toward a succession of Himalayan peaks.

In clear weather, distant peaks include Everest (8,848.86m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m) and Cho Oyu (8,188m). Comparing their overlapping forms and ridgelines with a local guide is part of the enjoyment.

Morning light on the snowy peaks adds to the appeal for photography. As the sky gradually brightens, the white mountains may turn pale gold. Sunrise visits are discussed according to season, weather, road conditions and travel time from your accommodation.

The pass can be cold and windy in the early morning. Bring a down jacket, gloves and a hat, and keep warm by resting in the vehicle while waiting. Photography takes place at designated viewpoints where vehicles can stop safely.

Views of any particular peak, or of all the mountains, are not guaranteed. We adjust the length of the stop to your health and travel schedule while enjoying that day's changing clouds and light.

New China–Nepal Highway / Friendship Highway

From Lhasa through Shigatse toward Kathmandu, Nepal's capital, the China–Nepal Highway offers a varied overland journey linking the wide skies and snowy mountains of the Tibetan plateau with green valleys on the southern Himalayan slopes.

The 2015 Nepal earthquake also severely damaged the previous border route. In 2017, the Gyirong–Rasuwagadhi border became an international port of entry available to third-country travelers, making this route an important link for journeys between Tibet and Nepal.

Traveling west from Shigatse, high passes alternate with broad river valleys. The Shelkar area is one base for journeys to Everest's northern side. In favorable weather, distant snowy mountains may also be visible along the road.

Farther toward Old Tingri, you may see distant peaks such as Everest (8,848.86m) and Cho Oyu (8,188m) beyond the open plateau. This offers a sense of the vast plateau and mountains distinct from looking up at the peaks close by.

Toward Gyirong, dry mountain scenery gives way to forested valleys. Continuing toward Nepal brings green slopes, villages and encounters with ways of life that differ by region. Combinations with Peiku Tso and Shishapangma can also be discussed according to trip length and travel conditions.

For cross-border journeys, we check road access, border operations, required permits and entry requirements for your departure period. Past operating information alone does not guarantee that a trip can run. Please tell us your preferred starting point, destination and trip length.

A Circuit of Culture and Scenery beyond the Mountains

Allow time for monasteries and the old town in Lhasa, Buddhist art and historic streets in Gyantse, and monastic and local life in Shigatse. Continuing from there to Himalayan viewpoints lets you experience snowy mountain scenery together with Tibetan history and faith.

Learning mountain names and waiting for changes in light and clouds are part of the pleasure at viewpoints. Views of every peak or clear skies at dawn and dusk cannot be guaranteed, but we adjust photography locations and time on site to local conditions.

Before photographing pilgrims or residents, ask permission and take care not to interrupt prayer or daily life. In natural areas, take your rubbish away and enjoy the journey within designated sightseeing boundaries.

Tell us your preferred departure date, trip length, group size and places you wish to visit. You are welcome to discuss photography trips, in-depth cultural journeys or circuits with family and friends in Japanese.
