Plan the pace of ascent and act on symptoms early.

Planning details
Ascend gradually when possible. Avoid alcohol and heavy exercise for the first 48 hours after arriving at high elevation.
Do not travel higher while altitude-illness symptoms persist. If symptoms worsen at the same altitude, descend and obtain medical help.
People with heart or lung disease should consult a clinician familiar with altitude medicine before travel. Medication decisions need individual medical advice.
