Understand the practical choices behind a thoughtful Tibet itinerary.

Planning details
01 · Travel documents
Check your document type, nationality and entry conditions for your travel dates. Do not extend a visa-free announcement beyond its stated validity.
02 · Tibet permission
Entry permission for China and Tibet travel permission are separate checks. International travelers should arrange their Tibet journey through a specialist agency and an organised tour.
03 · Agree your route
Check every destination before confirming the itinerary. A place shown on a map or sample route may not be available for your dates or document type.
04 · Group or private travel
Compare group operation, guide language, daily pace and room sharing. A private itinerary offers different planning choices but still needs applicable documentation.
05 · Allow enough days
Count arrival, departure and long transfers as part of the trip. More destinations do not necessarily create a better experience if every day becomes rushed.
06 · Flights and connections
Confirm actual flights, transfer buffers, baggage and local pickup. Review change conditions before buying connections to an unconfirmed tour.
07 · Railway travel
Confirm the boarding city, train number, sleeper class, meals and arrival time. Add a realistic arrival-day rest plan rather than an immediate full sightseeing day.
08 · Overland journeys
Review daily road time, stops and overnight towns. Agree how road closures or weather changes would affect the route and cost.
09 · Seasons and your interests
Select a season around your route and interests, not a universal best-month claim. Ask about actual road, lodging and activity conditions.
10 · Winter planning
Check heating, winter road access and operating accommodation. Ask whether any seasonal offer is confirmed and what it actually includes.
11 · Understand the budget
Compare equivalent dates, rooms and services. Separate domestic and international tickets from the local package and ask about optional costs.
12 · Hotels and bathrooms
Confirm hotel names or agreed alternatives, room sharing, bathroom type, hot water and heating. Remote lodging should be checked separately from city hotels.
13 · Meals and preferences
Tell the team about allergies, vegetarian preferences and other needs before booking. Confirm which meals are included and what remote stops can provide.
14 · Guides and cultural depth
Agree the service language and guiding days. Discuss whether you want more time for monastery architecture, teahouses, village walks or photography.
15 · Monastery and photo etiquette
Follow local instructions and ask before photographing people. Do not enter closed areas or interrupt religious practice for a photograph.
16 · Clothing and practical packing
Pack layers, wind protection, comfortable shoes, sun protection and charging supplies. Adapt the list to your route and forecast rather than one city’s weather.
17 · Altitude and rest
Plan a gradual pace. Do not continue higher while altitude-illness symptoms persist; seek medical advice for individual risks before departure.
18 · Assistance and insurance
Check the policy’s altitude and activity limits, emergency assistance and exclusions. Confirm how to contact the team and obtain help on remote days.
19 · Payments and communication
Confirm payment currency and method, connectivity needs and a practical contact backup. Do not assume every payment or communication service works at every stop.
20 · Final confirmation before travel
Recheck documents, pickups, actual bookings, changes and cancellation terms. Keep the confirmed written itinerary and agree how unexpected changes will be handled.
Confirm each item with your travel team. This checklist does not guarantee route access or availability.
Plan with local knowledge
Share your dates, interests and preferred language to discuss a suitable route. Requirements and operation need confirmation for your actual departure.

Additional travel themes
Luxury travel preferences
Describe the comfort and services you value rather than relying only on star ratings. Confirm the actual hotel, room category, private transport, meals and any extras in the written quote.
Self-driving requests
If you hope to drive, identify the vehicle and license documents before committing. Eligibility, temporary driving arrangements, route access, insurance and local support require specialist confirmation; this page does not offer an automatic self-drive booking.
Quiet cultural and spiritual visits
Allow unhurried time for temple visits, teahouses and local stories. Participation in ceremonies or access to retreat areas must be arranged with permission; no religious experience or meeting with a named practitioner is guaranteed.
Oxygen arrangements
If oxygen support is needed, confirm the actual equipment, availability and fees with the operator and seek individual medical guidance. It does not replace timely medical care or a necessary descent.
Older travelers and children
Age alone is not a personal health assessment. Discuss medical suitability, daily pace, walking demands and rest alternatives for every participant before booking.
