GANSU · AMDO & DUNHUANG

Gansu’s Tibetan culture and Dunhuang: from monasteries of prayer to the Silk Road

Explore Amdo monasteries and grasslands in Gannan and Tianzhu, then Buddhist cave art and oasis history in Dunhuang and Guazhou. Visit two distinct cultural landscapes through their own local stories, encountering desert light, mural colors and the sounds of prayer.

Tibetan culture in Gannan and Tianzhu

ラブラン寺(拉卜楞寺)

Labrang Monastery · Xiahe

Labrang Monastery in Xiahe is an important place to understand Amdo Buddhist culture. Its many halls and long prayer-wheel circuit reveal both a center of learning and the everyday devotion of worshippers.

In open halls we follow local guidance while introducing architecture and Buddhist art. We avoid blocking those turning prayer wheels and allow time for unhurried walks around the monastery and Xiahe town.

合作・ミラレパ仏閣

Milarepa Tower · Hezuo

Hezuo’s Milarepa Pavilion is a striking religious building with tiers rising one above another. Dedicated to the Tibetan practitioner Milarepa, it offers encounters with faith through interior sculptures and paintings.

Interior access and photography rules are checked locally. Take care on the stairs and combine the visit with Hezuo town and the surrounding plateau landscape.

郎木寺・甘粛側セルティ寺
Panoramic view over Langmusi town

Langmusi · Sertri Monastery, Gansu

Langmusi is a town on the Gansu–Sichuan border. On the Gansu side, Sertri Monastery (Saichi) is marked by hillside halls and golden roofs; it is separate from Kirti Monastery across the border in Sichuan.

The photograph overlooks the border town. We distinguish the monasteries on each side and follow their individual opening arrangements. Visit quietly, respecting religious events and residents’ lives.

桑科草原

桑科草原Sangke Grassland

At Sangke Grassland outside Xiahe, gentle meadows extend toward distant mountains. A short distance from the monastery town, changing skies and grazing scenes bring a slower pace to an Amdo journey.

We distinguish tourist facilities from working pastures and visit places that welcome guests. Flowers and activities vary by season; we can discuss plans that engage respectfully with local life.

ザガナ(扎尕那)

Zhagana · Diebu

Zhagana’s villages and fields spread across slopes encircled by rock mountains resembling stone fortresses. Morning light and valley mist change the scene, revealing the beauty of Gannan’s mountain villages.

Use viewpoints and open walking trails, respecting residents’ lives in the villages. Adjust distances to weather and fitness, enjoying details of houses and fields as well as distant views.

Dunhuang: Buddhist art and oasis

莫高窟

莫高窟Mogao Caves · Dunhuang

Caves lining the desert’s edge preserve Buddhist worlds created over many centuries. Murals and modeled sculptures reflect exchanges of cultures and aesthetics along the Silk Road.

Visits follow official booking and access systems. Available caves vary with operations and conservation requirements, so specific caves are not guaranteed. We respect artwork protection and interior photography rules.

西千仏洞

西千仏洞Western Thousand Buddha Caves

These caves are cut into cliffs along the Dang River. Combined with Mogao, they introduce Buddhist art around Dunhuang at different scales and within different spaces.

Access may be limited for conservation. Check opening and reservation conditions in advance, and follow rules on mural photography, lighting and touching.

榆林窟(瓜州)

榆林窟(瓜州)Yulin Caves · Guazhou

These caves lie east of Dunhuang in Guazhou County, rather than Dunhuang city. Within temples cut into valley cliffs, layers of Buddhist painting and sculptural history remain. They suit visitors seeking a deeper understanding of Dunhuang art.

Allow ample travel time from Dunhuang and arrange visits under official access systems. Special cave visits have conditions different from regular admission and require individual checks if requested.

鳴沙山・月牙泉

Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Lake

Wind-sculpted dune curves meet Crescent Lake resting quietly below. Water and sand within one scene symbolize the oasis town of Dunhuang. The shifting direction of light changes the dunes’ shadows and tones.

Walking on sand takes more effort than expected. Choose times that avoid heat and strong winds, with rest and water, and enjoy the scenery within your abilities.

Dunhuang: ancient passes and desert landscapes

玉門関

玉門関Yumen Pass

At Yumen Pass, earthen walls remain in wide wilderness. Facing the ruins known as Xiaofangpan Fortress, imagine ancient routes carrying people and goods beyond today’s quiet.

Follow designated visitor routes without climbing the remains or taking soil away. Understanding their relationship to the Han Great Wall and Hecang ruins reveals a wider history beyond one structure.

陽関

陽関Yangguan Pass

Southwest of Dunhuang, this place is tied to ancient transport and frontier history. View the surviving beacon-tower ruins and nearby displays to explore the background of Silk Road journeys.

We distinguish modern gates and exhibition facilities from ancient remains. Prepare for desert wind and sun and allow ample time outdoors.

敦煌ヤルダン地質公園

Dunhuang Yardang Geopark

Rows of wind-eroded rock trace strange outlines across the wilderness. Spot forms resembling castles and ships while sensing the land’s slow transformation over time.

Use park transport and designated viewpoints, avoiding damage such as climbing rock formations. Far from central Dunhuang, sunset photography requires planning the return journey as well.

鎖陽城遺跡(瓜州)

鎖陽城遺跡(瓜州)Suoyang City Ruins · Guazhou

Guazhou’s walls and urban traces tell of cities established in oases and the people who lived there. Seen with the surrounding terrain, they invite reflection on how water and transport sustained urban life.

Explore this extensive site within protected visitor boundaries. Like Yulin Caves, it is in Guazhou outside Dunhuang city; allow travel time rather than treating it as a simple city sightseeing stop.

Gannan monasteries & history

禅定寺(卓尼)|Chanding Monastery · Chone

Chanding Monastery in Jonê is important for understanding Buddhist learning and scripture printing in Gannan. Together with the surrounding town, it reveals differences among Amdo’s local traditions. Check open halls and religious activity schedules before visiting.

Tianzhu monasteries

Tiantang Monastery and Tiantang town | Tianzhu

Tiantang Monastery in Gansu’s Tianzhu Tibetan Autonomous County is a local center of faith amid mountains and forests in the Datong River basin. Near the Qinghai border, it requires a separate regional itinerary, rather than being treated as in the same town as Labrang or Dunhuang.

夏河周辺

Ganjia Grassland, Bajiao Fortress and Baishiya

North of Xiahe, Ganjia offers distinct landscapes of grassland, ancient walls and white rock mountains. Explore Bajiao Fortress’s form and local history; around Baishiya, respect monastery worship spaces and the protection of research sites. Cave-interior access is not promised as ordinary sightseeing.

Gannan grasslands & wetlands

Gahai, Awancang and the Yellow River’s first-bend wetlands

Around Gahai in Luqu and Awancang in Maqu lie plateau lakes, wetlands and winding rivers. Keep your distance when birdwatching or photographing; use designated viewing areas rather than entering wetlands on foot or by vehicle.

Gannan mountains & villages

Yeliguan, Dayugou, Zecha Stone Forest and Laga Mountain

Yeliguan in Lintan, Dayugou in Jonê, Zecha Stone Forest in Luqu and Laga Mountain in Zhouqu offer forests, cliffs and valley villages. Terrain and elevations vary even within Gannan; plan nature walks alongside local culture.

Explore Dunhuang’s history in greater depth

Han Great Wall and Hecang ruins

Around Yumen Pass, combine the fortress with Great Wall remains and storage-related ruins to understand the systems supporting ancient routes. Follow protected visitor paths while observing materials such as earth and reeds.

Walking in Dunhuang

Dunhuang Museum and Shazhou Night Market

The museum places local history in context; the night market offers the bustle of a modern oasis town. Check exhibition changes and closures. Enjoy food traditions and handicrafts at the market while respecting people’s photography preferences and shop operations.

Cultural landscapes near Dunhuang

White Horse Pagoda, Leiyin Temple and Yangguan exhibits

White Horse Pagoda introduces local stories of Buddhism’s transmission, while Leiyin Temple offers an encounter with living faith. Displays around Yangguan add context to the ancient pass. We distinguish traditions, modern architecture and ancient remains.

More on the Guazhou area

Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves and Qiaowan Fortress

These heritage places may suit an extension toward Guazhou. Cave sites such as the Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves require individual conservation and access checks; they are not presented as always open. Select destinations according to their distance from Dunhuang.

Discover the land’s stories beyond the scenery.
